Hobbies and crafts I am dying to try
I believe that finding time to try out new hobbies can be or become your key to a having a pot of pure bliss and happiness.
Here is a list of 10 crafts I have always wanted to try
1) Sewing
Do you know how cool it is to be able to have pants that don’t drag on the floor, because you knew how to hem them? Garments that will always fit your body, because they were literally made for you? And let’s not forget about the stunning patterns that exist online for you to create pieces of clothing I am sure you could love for a lifetime.
I just find sewing awesome! But to start out with a sewing machine, needles, fabric scissors, fabrics and co, sounds like a costly investment. It remains on my “must-try”/”one day” list for now.
2) Pottery
There is something about creating with your hands that I find fascinating. Pottery for me starts out with the fact that I think touching clay just sounds fun. Like what do you mean this pile of goo will harden and become a beautiful mug, ramen bowl, vase, etc.?
My social media feed is littered with artists who create stunning pieces from whimsical to practical and again and I really would love to know what I would create if I had the chance to do so.
Similar to sewing, pottery courses can be quite costly, especially since they include the materials, the space and the equipment to offer you the full pottery experience. Who knows? Maybe I have only looked in the wrong corners so far, but pottery too shall remain on my “must-try” list
3) Latte art
I am not a coffee drinker at all, but latte art can be applied to all things Latte, such as Matchas, Chais and more, so onto the list this goes.
I love the atmosphere of cozy cafes and the labor of love that baristas put in to create beautiful drinks. As a consumer, it has definitely always made me appreciate the drink more.
4) Knitting
My mom is still wearing the balaclava she knitted over ten years ago. I think that’s super cool and I want to be able to knit something too that will last just as long.
I’m amazed by how many techniques of knitting exist out there from intricate designs using different colours of wool to creating 3D knitting art.
5) Surfing
I have a lot of respect for bodies of waters, especially when I have no idea of what’s underneath me while I try to stay afloat. Nonetheless, I really want to try out surfing! This sport has just made it onto the list, because I am genuinely curious.
6) Scrapbooking
Creating a journal filled with stickers (that can finally be used instead of just being collected in your dusty drawer), small sketches and thoughts on trips, food, movies, books and co. just sounds wholesome.
It’s like a diary, except that it includes a lot more visual elements. I’m afraid that if I tried out scrapbooking, I would fall into an obsession and wouldn’t be able to stop buying yet another notebook, washi tapes and cute pens. (I am a sucker for aesthetic writing supplies) One way that I still try to incorporate this craft is by creating a digital version.
My main instagram account has become my scrap book, which is why the background is always an old papery color and why you see so many stickers on my posts.
7) Martial arts
My siblings and I grew up watching Jackie Chan, Jet Li and more on borrowed DVDs back in the early 2000s and I would lie if I said I that I have not imagined myself being a character in one of the martial art movies.
I am too uninformed as of right now to be able to tell you which form of martial art I would be interested in trying, but I tell you what, I would love to be an old lady one day, minding my own business doing (hard) QiGong in the park. And when you least expect it - BAM - busted out a crazy move.
8) Cooking
Don’t you already cook? Yes, I do. But there for me there is a difference between cooking quick meals so I can feed myself and understanding the science behind why using sauces can tenderise proteins, how heat affects the aromas of spices and techniques of plating to combining flavours of savory and sweet.
Cooking can be an art form and that is something I really want to become a geek in. I want to have a wok that I have seasoned, try out sous-vide, pickling and fermenting and enjoy food on a whole different level than I have so far.
9) Woodwork
There was a time in my life when I couldn’t stop watching home renovation videos and those 2 guys building pools and what not in what seemed a dessert or forest. Anyhow, what I have been eager to try ever since has been creating my own practical furniture.
Oh, this coffee table? Ah yes, I made that one. That aesthetic round table popping up on your Pinterest board named “Japandi/Scandi style home” - yeah I made that one too. See? Cool and practical. So far I only have a handsaw, drill, and screwdrivers. But hey, we all have to start somewhere.
10) Calisthenics
See, your body is incredible and the things it is capable enough if being nurtured and cared for are beyond what I can imagine at this point in time. I don’t believe I am physically at my strongest potential yet. So I can only get better from here.
I find it astonishing that you can push yourself up in the air or hold difficult poses with only your bodyweight. Aside from crazy stunts, I genuinely want to try out Calisthenics to build better core stability, enjoy movement and become stronger.
If you have made it this far, thank you for reading! :) I would really like to read about your “dying to try out” crafts, hobbies and sporty activities in the comments below or via mail.
